HYDRO HISTORY
(1885 - present)
For over 100 years, Gurley has manufactured hydrological current meters and accessories for open channels, rivers and streams. Products include Price and pygmy meters, digital indicators and headphone sets, support systems, including cranes, sounding reels and more. Their rugged, durable construction assures many years of trouble-free, accurate operation under the most difficult of field survey conditions. All the instruments are completely portable and self-contained for operation in a field environment.
ORIGIN
In 1885, Gurley (then W. & L.E. Gurley) entered into a contract with William Gunn Price (1853-1928) for the manufacturing and distribution of his patented Price current meters. Price was the foremost authority on current meters in his day. His greatest claim to fame was the discharge-measuring operations of the Mississippi River Commission, which he headed. His efforts paved the way for Gurley into the field of hydrological equipment manufacturing. Later, in 1896, Edwin Geary Paul, then the head mechanician of the U.S. Geological Survey, designed and developed the first pygmy meter in conjunction with W. & L.E. Gurley. Its lightness, ability to disassemble and pack into a very small space appealed to the technicians in the field.
Throughout our history, we have always blazed a trail for others to follow. Many of the first current meter designs have their roots in Troy, and meters manufactured decades ago are still in use today.
